Short answer

Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights are free and cover most of what a small site needs.

An SEO audit tool crawls your site and reports what is broken: indexation gaps, slow pages, missing titles, broken links. Search Console uses Google's own index data, which no paid tool can replace. Work through everything the free tools tell you before paying for anything, and treat tool scores as heuristics rather than targets.

This list has 31 tools live on 2026-08-19. Unlike the submission lists on this site, these are things you use rather than places you submit to.

Start with the two free tools that matter most

Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights are free, they use Google's own data, and between them they answer most of the questions a small site has. Search Console tells you what is indexed, what is broken and what you rank for. PageSpeed Insights gives you Core Web Vitals from real Chrome users.

No paid tool replaces either. Paid tools add competitor data, keyword databases and scheduled crawling, which matter once you are competing seriously, but they are additions rather than substitutes.

What to check in a basic audit

  1. Indexation: how many pages are indexed versus how many exist, and why the gap is there.
  2. Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP and CLS on mobile, measured on real users rather than in a lab.
  3. Titles and meta descriptions: missing, duplicated or truncated ones across the site.
  4. Internal links: pages with no inbound internal links are effectively invisible to crawlers.
  5. Broken links and redirect chains, both internal and outbound.
  6. Mobile usability and accessibility, which increasingly overlap with each other.

Free tiers and what they leave out

Most tools here are freemium. The free tier typically caps crawl depth, hides historical data or limits reports per day. Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs free, which covers a small site completely. Ahrefs and Semrush offer restricted free accounts with the useful parts behind a subscription.

For a site under a few hundred pages, the free tiers are genuinely sufficient. Do not pay for a tool until you have acted on everything the free ones have already told you.

How to read this table. DA, PA and Spam Score are real Moz figures from our own bulk checks. A dash means we have not run that domain yet, not that it scored zero, and we would rather show the gap than guess. Lower Spam Score is better. Authority is our own 0 to 100 score derived from global popularity rank, and spam risk is Low for sites with a measurable audience and valid TLS. Every site here was also confirmed to load on 2026-08-19, which is the check DA cannot make: Moz still reports a healthy DA for services that shut down years ago.

A tool tells you what is wrong. It cannot tell you which of the forty issues it found is the one costing you customers. That judgement is the actual work, and it is why audit scores make poor targets.
