Directory submission means listing your business in a categorised index of websites. It is the oldest off-page tactic there is, it was comprehensively abused, and Google's response has left most of the category worthless.

Short answer

Local and industry directories still help. General web directories do almost nothing.

Directory submission means listing your business in a categorised index. Google devalued general directories after the Penguin updates, so submitting to hundreds of them will not move your rankings. What still works is local and vertical listings, because they confirm your name, address and phone consistently across the web, which supports local and map pack visibility.

Be honest about this category first

General web directories, the kind that index every site on the internet by topic, have been devalued since the Penguin updates. Submitting to two hundred of them will do nothing for your rankings and can look like a link scheme if the directories exist for SEO rather than for readers.

What still works is narrower: local and industry directories where customers actually look. For a Dehradun business, a Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART listing are worth more than every general directory on this page combined, because people search those platforms directly.

How to tell a useful directory from a harmful one

Would a customer ever browse it? If the directory exists only so websites can get links, the link is worth nothing and may count against you.
Does it have editorial standards? Directories that review submissions are worth the wait. Directories that publish instantly and automatically are not.
Is it local or vertical? A Dehradun business listing or a directory specific to your industry beats a general one every time.
Check NAP consistency. Your name, address and phone number must match your Google Business Profile exactly. Inconsistent NAP across directories actively damages local rankings.
Avoid anything charging for a dofollow link. That is a paid link under Google's guidelines, and the directories doing it are rarely worth it anyway.

What we removed from this list

The source spreadsheet had over nine hundred directory entries. A large share failed: dead domains, expired certificates, parked pages and sites now redirecting somewhere unrelated. Directory sites have a shorter life than almost any other category here, which is exactly why an unverified directory list ages so badly.

One example worth naming: webdirectoryphil.com appears on circulating lists at DA 94. It is not in the global top one million domains. Numbers like that get copied for years without anyone checking them.

How to read this table.DA, PA and Spam Score are real Moz figures from our own bulk checks. A dash means we have not run that domain yet, not that it scored zero, and we would rather show the gap than guess. Authority is our own 0 to 100 score derived from global popularity rank, and spam risk now reports a measurement or nothing at all: Low up to a spam score of 30, Medium above it, and “Not checked” against the same gap that dash marks. It used to guess from popularity when no score existed, until enough of these lists carried both numbers to test that guess, and it turned out to be wrong far more often than right. A domain flagged “no HTTPS” failed the certificate check, which is worth knowing but is not a spam signal. Every site here was also confirmed to load on 2026-08-19, which is the check DA cannot make: Moz still reports a healthy DA for services that shut down years ago, because it is computed from a link graph that remembers them.

A word on Spam Score. It counts how many spam-associated patterns a domain trips, not whether the site is bad. Large platforms full of user-generated pages trip a lot of them: the Internet Archive scores 60 percent here and is one of the most legitimate domains on the internet. Read a high score as a reason to look at the specific page you would be linked from, not as a reason to avoid the site.

For a local business, five directories your customers actually use will beat two hundred general ones. Start with Google Business Profile, then Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART and your industry association, and only then work through this list.

Quality decides this, not quantity. Ten directories real people use beats two hundred that exist only for SEO. Prioritise local and vertical directories and stop when you run out of relevant ones.

Sometimes, if the directory sends real referral traffic and your customers use it. Paying purely for a dofollow link is against Google's guidelines and is usually a waste of money regardless.

NAP is name, address and phone number. Search engines cross reference these across directories to confirm a business is real and located where it says. Mismatched details weaken local rankings, so fix inconsistencies before adding new listings.

It can, if you submit at volume to obvious link farms. A handful of low quality listings inside a normal profile is harmless. Hundreds added quickly is a recognisable footprint.

For local citations, several weeks before search engines have crawled and reconciled them. For general directories, realistically never, which is why the local ones are worth the time and the rest are not.

Only if you serve customers there. An Indian business listed in a US-only directory gets an irrelevant link and no enquiries. Relevance matters far more than the count.
