What is Custom Software Development?

Custom software development is designing and building software around the way a particular business works, instead of bending the business to fit an off-the-shelf product. Doon Digital builds custom web applications, booking and enquiry systems, internal tools, data pipelines and integrations, plus the desktop and mobile apps that go with them, for businesses in the US, UK and Europe, working from India. Our own work includes a direct-booking system for a Himalayan homestay, the crawler and data pipeline behind 26 verified resource lists, and three apps live today.

The Problem

Your team copies the same data between three systems, takes bookings through a tangle of emails and messages, or runs part of the business from a spreadsheet that has outgrown itself. Off-the-shelf tools get you most of the way, then force your process into their shape. And the agencies offering to build something custom rarely show you anything they have built and kept running.

Our Solution

We map how the work actually happens, recommend whether to buy, connect or build, and if building is right, deliver it in milestones you can test. You deal directly with the people writing the code, we choose technology the next team can maintain, and we recommend the system runs in accounts and hosting your business controls.

Strata app icon

Strata

Disk map and uninstaller for macOS

See what is taking up space on your Mac.

Strata maps a whole Mac drive in seconds, shows every folder at its real size, and removes what you choose in a way you can undo. Six tools share one window: the map, search, large files, an uninstaller, live readouts and undo.

macOSBuilt with Swift
  • 12 MBDownload, Swift with no browser engine inside
  • macOS 13+Universal build for Apple silicon and Intel
  • NotarizedSigned with a Developer ID, checked by Apple
  • $9.99Strata Pro, paid once; viewing stays free
Strata's Map view drawing a 1.1 TB home folder as nested rectangles sized by disk usage
Strata's Map view drawing a 1.1 TB home folder as nested rectangles sized by disk usage. A real scan, not a mockup, as published on stratamaccleaner.com.

What went into it

  • A squarified treemap of any drive or folder. Results stream in as they arrive, so the map is readable before the scan ends, and a full boot volume takes under a minute on most Macs.
  • Sizes are what files actually occupy on disk, not the length they claim, so the totals agree with Finder on APFS, where clones, sparse files and compression make those two numbers differ constantly.
  • Hard links are counted once, so Time Machine snapshots do not inflate the total.
  • The uninstaller searches eighteen Library locations for an app's leftovers, grades every match, and checks each one against every other installed app first, so removing Word never offers up Excel's preferences.
  • Every removal goes to the Trash, so Finder can put it back even if Strata is never opened again.

Maintainly app icon

Maintainly

Home maintenance app for iPhone

Stop small fixes becoming big bills.

Maintainly turns scattered home upkeep into one prioritised plan and reminds people in time, so a $12 filter never becomes a $4,000 repair. It is built for homeowners in the US, UK, Australia and Canada.

  • App StoreFree to download, with Pro as one purchase
  • 66Maintenance tasks in the built-in library
  • 4Countries, each with its own climate rules
  • OfflineWorks without a connection, syncs later
Maintainly home screen with a Maintenance Score of 100 and five upcoming tasks
Maintainly tasks screen filtered into overdue, due soon and upcoming
Maintainly task library grouped by safety and HVAC, with one-tap add
Maintainly task detail for checking a fire extinguisher, with next due date and repeat interval
Maintainly equipment page for smoke and CO alarms with five linked tasks
Maintainly Maintenance Score screen with the score ring and what affects it

Unretouched screens from the current iPhone build, as published on maintainly.in. Scroll for more.

What went into it

  • A starter plan built during a two-minute setup from the home's type, location and equipment, with a Maintenance Score that climbs as tasks get done.
  • Offline-first: tasks are added and completed on the device and sync when the connection comes back.
  • A shareable PDF Home Report with the score, equipment and warranty details, recorded spending and a dated maintenance history.
  • Guest-first onboarding, so nobody needs an account to start using it.
  • Climate and country aware: Australian postcodes resolve to the right climate, so Brisbane is never asked to winterise, and autumn tasks arrive in March.
Kapy Notes app icon

Kapy Notes

Notes with built-in calculations

Notes that do the math.

A calm notebook for lists, journals and plans where answers appear only on the lines that need them. Write a budget in plain words and the totals, units and currency conversions show up in a slim rail beside it.

macOSWindowsiOSAndroidBuilt with Flutter
  • FlutterOne framework across desktop and mobile
  • EncryptedEnd-to-end encrypted sync, off by default

Kapy Notes working out a Lisbon trip budget, with totals and a euro to dollar conversion in a rail beside each line. Captured from the live app window rendered on kapynotes.com.

What went into it

  • Inline calculations with variables, units, percentages and currency conversion, answered in a rail beside the lines that ask.
  • Local by default. Sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted with a passphrase only the user knows.
  • Voice notes transcribed and summarised on the device with no account and nothing leaving it, or in the cloud on devices that cannot do it themselves.
  • Shared notes, with collaborators shown by name and picture rather than by email address.
  • Numbers follow the device's region, so a device set to India counts in lakh and crore rather than millions.

What We Offer

Off-the-shelf software is the right answer more often than agencies admit. When a subscription tool does the job, we will tell you, because buying it costs less than building it. Custom software earns its cost when the way you work is the advantage: a booking flow your customers prefer to a marketplace's, a tool that removes hours of copying between systems, or data nobody else has. We built a direct-booking website for Namah Stay Himalayas, an orchard homestay in Kanatal. Guests search their dates on an availability calendar, send a booking request without paying, add extras such as a bonfire evening or farm-fresh meals, and the hosts confirm the tariff on WhatsApp. One structured request replaces a chain of messages, and the booking comes straight to the owners. For our own site we built the crawler and data pipeline behind 26 resource lists. It crawled 6,375 domains, removed the 44 percent that were dead, and adds real Moz figures as each domain is checked, 800 so far, in place of the made-up authority numbers these lists usually carry. Our blog is wired up the same way: articles arrive from an SEO platform through an authenticated webhook and land in our own database. Collecting messy data, cleaning it and putting it where people can use it is most of what custom software does. Software is never finished. Operating systems, browsers and the services you connect to keep changing, so we plan maintenance, security updates and improvements after launch, as we do for our own apps, which each publish a release history.

Build, Buy or Connect?

Custom software is not always the answer, and we will say so when it is not. These are the three routes we weigh with you before anything is quoted.

Buy, when a tool already does the job

If a subscription product covers how you work, it is almost always cheaper to buy it than to build it. We will tell you which one, and stop there.

Connect, when good tools do not talk to each other

Often the problem is the copying between systems, not the systems. A small integration that moves data between the tools you already pay for is usually the cheapest custom software there is.

Build, when the way you work is the advantage

A booking flow your customers prefer to a marketplace's, a tool that removes hours of manual work each week, or data nobody else has. That is where custom software earns its cost.

Working With Us From the US, UK and Europe

We design and build from Dehradun, India, for clients in other time zones. Maintainly, one of our own apps, is built for homeowners in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. These are the practical questions overseas teams ask first.

Time zones

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year, with no daylight saving. That puts us 3.5 to 4.5 hours ahead of Central Europe, 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK and 9.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of the mainland US. European mornings overlap our afternoons. With US teams we agree a regular call window at the start and keep everything else in writing, so work never waits on a meeting.

How you see progress

As installable test builds and private staging sites rather than slides: TestFlight for iPhone and Mac, Google Play testing tracks for Android, test builds for desktop software and a staging site for web projects. Decisions are written down, so nobody has to remember what was agreed on a call.

Scope, quote and changes

Before work starts you get a written scope and a fixed quote, with milestones agreed alongside it. If the scope changes, we price the change before doing it, so the final invoice holds no surprises.

Ownership and accounts

The contract sets out who owns the code, the designs and the store listings. We recommend that everything lives in accounts your business controls from the first day: your Apple and Google developer accounts, your code repository and your hosting.

Privacy law

If your product offers goods or services to people in the EU or UK, or monitors their behaviour, the GDPR and UK GDPR generally apply. Where we process that data on your behalf we do it under a written data processing agreement, with Standard Contractual Clauses, or the UK equivalent, covering access from India. US state laws such as California's CCPA may apply too. We collect as little as the product needs: Kapy Notes keeps notes on the device unless the user turns on end-to-end encrypted sync.

Accessibility

The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer products and services sold in the EU, including e-commerce and banking. In the US, ADA claims regularly cover websites and apps. We plan for screen readers, larger text and colour contrast from the first design, because retrofitting them late costs far more.

What Decides the Price of Custom Software

We quote each project from a written scope rather than a price list. These are the things that move the number.

Users and roles

A tool for one team with one way of working is simpler than a system with customers, staff and managers who each see and do different things.

Integrations

Every system the software talks to, whether payments, calendars, a CRM or an accounting package, needs building, testing and keeping working when the other side changes.

Existing data

Moving years of records out of spreadsheets or an old system takes cleaning and checking, and it is often the part people underestimate.

Security and compliance

Personal data, payments and regulated industries bring extra design, testing and paperwork, including GDPR obligations for anyone in the EU or UK.

Platforms

A web application reachable from any browser costs less than the same system with dedicated desktop and mobile apps, though some work genuinely needs them.

Life after launch

Hosting, security updates, backups and small improvements continue after release. We agree that rhythm with you before launch rather than after.

Technology We Use

We pick well-supported, widely known technology, so the software is not tied to us and the next team can maintain it. These are what our live projects run on.

  • TypeScript, React and Next.js for web applications, as on this website
  • Node.js and PHP on the server
  • MySQL for relational data
  • Python for crawling and data processing
  • Swift for native Mac apps, as in Strata
  • Flutter for apps that span mobile and desktop

Three Ways to Work With Us

A defined project

A new app, a rebuild or a piece of software with a clear goal. We scope it, quote a fixed price and deliver it in milestones you can test, through to the store release or the handover.

A product that keeps shipping

Most software needs a steady rhythm after launch: fixes, new operating system versions and new features. We plan releases with you and keep a changelog your users can read, as Strata, Maintainly and Kapy Notes each do.

Taking over an existing product

If another team built your app or software, we start by reviewing the code, the build setup and the accounts it depends on, then tell you plainly what to keep, fix or rebuild before you commit to anything.
