What is Mac App Development?

Mac app development is building software for macOS, distributed either through the Mac App Store or directly with a Developer ID and Apple notarization. Doon Digital builds Mac apps from Dehradun and has two of its own on the Mac: Strata, a 14 MB native Swift app that maps a whole drive in seconds and removes files in a way you can undo, and Kapy Notes, a Flutter notes app that transcribes voice notes with Apple's own speech recogniser. Both are universal for Apple silicon and Intel. We handle the design, the code, signing, packaging and updates.

The Problem

Mac users have little patience for software that feels bolted on: apps hundreds of megabytes in size, apps that spin up the fans, ask for a password without saying why, or trigger a security warning the first time they open. Getting a Mac app right takes code that respects the platform, careful handling of permissions, and a properly signed release.

Built for macOS

  • Distributed directly rather than through the Mac App Store: signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens cleanly on first launch.
  • Memory is counted the way Activity Monitor counts it, and the live readouts run on a one-second timer that stops the moment Strata is not the front app.
  • It asks for Full Disk Access and explains why: without it macOS hides Mail, Messages and Safari data from the scan, and the totals come out short.
  • System-owned files are listed but never touched, and no administrator password is ever requested.

Across the product

  • A squarified treemap of any drive or folder. Results stream in as they arrive, so the map is readable before the scan ends, and a full boot volume takes under a minute on most Macs.
  • Sizes are what files actually occupy on disk, not the length they claim, so the totals agree with Finder on APFS, where clones, sparse files and compression make those two numbers differ constantly.
  • Hard links are counted once, so Time Machine snapshots do not inflate the total.
  • The uninstaller searches eighteen Library locations for an app's leftovers, grades every match, and checks each one against every other installed app first, so removing Word never offers up Excel's preferences.
  • Every removal goes to the Trash, so Finder can put it back even if Strata is never opened again.

  • A universal download for Apple silicon and Intel Macs, installed from a .dmg on kapynotes.com.
  • On a recent Mac, voice notes are transcribed with the speech recogniser Apple already ships, so there is nothing to download and nothing to set up.
  • Dictation tools that live outside the app, such as Wispr Flow and Spokenly, can type straight into a note, even while its window is not the active one.
  • An optional transparent window, and a built-in updater that checks once a day and downloads nothing until the user asks.

Across the product

  • Inline calculations with variables, units, percentages and currency conversion, answered in a rail beside the lines that ask.
  • Local by default. Sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted with a passphrase only the user knows.

What We Offer

A Mac app has to earn its place on a machine people care about. It should be small, quick to open, clear about why it needs a permission, and it should never do anything that cannot be undone. That is the standard we build to. Strata is our own Mac app, written in Swift with no bundled browser engine, so the entire download is 14 MB. It draws a squarified treemap of any drive, streaming results in so the map is readable before the scan finishes, and it measures what files actually occupy on disk, so its totals agree with Finder on APFS. Its uninstaller searches eighteen Library locations for an app's leftovers and grades every match before anything is removed. Kapy Notes shows the other way to reach the Mac. It is built in Flutter, so the same notebook runs on Windows, iPhone and Android, yet on the Mac it still behaves like a Mac app: it transcribes voice notes with the speech recogniser Apple already ships, lets dictation tools such as Wispr Flow type straight into a note, and follows the Mac's Region setting for how it writes numbers. We distribute Strata directly, signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens cleanly on first launch without the warnings unsigned software triggers.
