Pinging does very little now
Google has said explicitly that it no longer relies on pings for discovery, and it retired support for the old ping protocols. Modern crawling is driven by sitemaps, internal links and how often your site changes. WordPress still pings by default, which is harmless and roughly pointless.
There is a real risk at the other end of this. Mass pinging services that hit hundreds of endpoints repeatedly are treated as spam behaviour by the services being pinged, and they were never effective in the first place.
What to do instead for fast indexation
- Submit a sitemap in Google Search Console and keep it current.
- Use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for individual important pages.
- Link the new page from pages that already get crawled often, such as your homepage or a hub page.
- Publish consistently. Sites that change regularly get crawled more often, which is the actual lever here.
- For genuinely time sensitive content, use the IndexNow protocol, which Bing supports and which is the modern replacement for pinging.
