What replaced it is research: a number nobody else has, presented clearly on your own page, promoted by contacting the people you cited. The visual is the packaging, not the reason anyone links.

Why infographic link building stopped working
It was overused. Between 2011 and 2014 agencies produced enormous volumes of thin infographics purely to earn embeds, Google devalued the pattern, and most of the directories that hosted them closed or became link farms.
The underlying idea survived in better form. Original data, presented clearly, still earns links reliably. What changed is that the data has to be genuinely yours, and the visual has to be worth embedding rather than merely existing.
What earns links with visuals now
- Publish original research. A survey of forty local businesses gives you numbers nobody else has, and numbers are what get cited.
- Make single charts rather than long scrolling posters. One clear chart is far more embeddable and more likely to be shared.
- Host it on your own page with real analysis around it, so the citation points somewhere substantial.
- Tell the people whose work you referenced. Direct outreach earns more embeds than any directory submission.
- Add the raw numbers as a table under the graphic. It is accessible, it is indexable, and journalists will use it.
