Gov backlinks have a reputation as the most powerful links available. That reputation is largely a myth, and this page starts there because it changes what you should do next.
Short answer
Gov links carry no ranking bonus. Google has said so, and most tactics for getting them are spam.
There is nothing special about the .gov extension. Government sites tend to be old and link out rarely, so a link from one is usually genuinely editorial, but that is a property of those sites rather than of the suffix. The legitimate routes are supplier registration, industry associations, sponsoring public programmes and professional licensing registers.

Google has said gov links are not special
There is no ranking bonus attached to the .gov TLD. Google has stated this repeatedly. Gov links tend to be valuable because government sites are old, well linked and rarely link out, so a link from one is usually genuinely editorial. The value comes from those properties, not from the extension.
This matters because it changes what is worth pursuing. A relevant link from a respected industry publication beats an irrelevant one from a government department, and it is very often easier to get.
Most gov link tactics are spam
The methods circulated for getting gov backlinks are, almost without exception, forms of abuse: comment spam on government blogs, profile spam on staff directories, exploiting open redirects, and posting into unmoderated forums on university and department sites.
Those links get removed, often in bulk, and the ones that remain sit on pages nobody reads. Some of these techniques involve exploiting a security weakness on a public sector site, which is worth avoiding on grounds well beyond SEO.
Legitimate ways a business earns a gov link
- Register as a supplier or vendor where your local or state government publishes such lists.
- Join an industry association or chamber of commerce that government sites already reference.
- Sponsor or support a public programme, event or initiative that publishes its supporters.
- Publish genuinely useful local research that a department has reason to cite.
- Get certified or licensed where the licensing body publishes a public register of holders.
